A Look Back at the Life of America's First Female Vice President

Kamala Devi Harris, born October 20, 1964, is an American politician and attorney who is the 49th and current vice president of the United States. Harris is the first female, first Black, and first South Asian American vice president. She is also the first graduate of a historically Black college or university to hold the office.

Harris was born in Oakland, California, to Shyamala Gopalan Harris, an Indian immigrant, and Donald Harris, a Jamaican immigrant. She graduated from Howard University and the University of California, Hastings College of the Law. Harris began her career as a deputy district attorney in Alameda County, California, and later served as the district attorney of San Francisco from 2004 to 2011.

In 2011, Harris was elected as the first female attorney general of California. She served in that role until 2017, when she was elected to the United States Senate. Harris was a prominent candidate in the 2020 Democratic presidential primary, but she withdrew from the race in December 2019. Harris was selected as Joe Biden's running mate in the 2020 presidential election, and Biden and Harris were inaugurated as president and vice president on January 20, 2021.
