The First Father's Day Present
The first Father's Day present was given in 1910 by Sonora Smart Dodd, a woman from Spokane, Washington. Dodd's father, William Jackson Smart, was a Civil War veteran who raised six children on his own after his wife died in childbirth. Dodd wanted to honor her father and all fathers, so she proposed the idea of a Father's Day holiday to her local church. The church agreed, and the first Father's Day was celebrated in Spokane on June 19, 1910.
Father's Day quickly became a popular holiday, and by 1924, it was being celebrated in all 48 states. In 1972, President Richard Nixon signed a law making Father's Day a permanent national holiday. Today, Father's Day is celebrated on the third Sunday of June in the United States and many other countries around the world.
